Acts 1. On the heels of the resurrection and Jesus ascending to Heaven, the disciples were about to enter into the most difficult time in Christianity. To be a follower of Jesus meant you would be persecuted and even be put to death. Why did they kill the early Christians? It was not for worshipping Jesus. It was because they wouldn’t worship and acknowledge the other gods of the Roman Empire (Francis Schaeffer). In other words, they were saying, “You can worship your Jesus, but you have to call every other religion legit.” That’s the generation we are living in today. In order to prepare us for what is ahead, Jesus left us a good and perfect gift – the gift of the Holy Spirit. And when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered not only to witness, but to become a witness. The Holy Spirit is not a luxury, the Holy Spirit is a necessity.
